Surveyor Series

Several years ago, two surveyor rod’s from the 1940’s found their way into my possession. These simple and ingenious tools have entered my lexicon both visually and metaphorically. I am astounded at the amount of information that has been gathered using what amounts to little more than a stick and a lens. Like many things, it takes collaboration and communication between two knowledgeable individuals to find and interpret the data. Visually, the objects are stunning, with a simple color palette and bold graphic imagery. By enlarging and abstracting the shapes and rendering these designs in tapestry I decontextualize the tools as gendered stereotypes, and re-casts them as exotic objects, with a life and purpose outside of the confines of their intended purpose.

Matrilineal

Matrilineal investigates the lonely and uncanny experience I had in my daughter's first year of life. In a desperate attempt to remember an epiphany I had in this year, I formed a symbol; three chalices stacked upon one another as an ever advancing arrow. It took time to realize this symbol was remarkably similar to the Enlistment Rankings proudly displayed on the shoulders of Naval uniforms; it felt as though I had become a member with honors in the sisterhood of motherhood. Originally made for the exhibition Fore & Aft.

Staysail

The job of a staysail, the smallest sail located at the very front of the sail boat, is to give the entire rig balance and keep it steady. Handwoven in cotton and wool, this sculpture explores the important role that humble, fragile textiles play in the functionality of sea travel. The handwoven sculpture was ceremoniously tossed into Lake Michigan and it’s voyage to the shore was documented; this is one of three resulting images. The photos eerily capture what I imagine to be the experience of stumbling onto the evidence of a shipwreck. Here the sail makes it's violent journey to the shore line, being pummeled by waves and sand. Originally made for the exhibition Fore & Aft.

Y.H.W.

From the Fore & Aft body of work, this is yet another exploration of motherhood. In this image the figure is my own mother. She is signaling to an empty sea. This piece is about the contradictory act of being diligent and letting go, and the inevitability of tragedy in our lives. Originally made for the exhibition Fore & Aft.

Update: We didn’t know it at the time, but my mother had cancer when she modeled for these photographs. She died in 2022, making this work hauntingly accurate to the original concept, and the images all the more meaningful.
